Google Map Maker : Opportunities, Challenge, Stake for Cartographers from Africa as from 2013
Google
Map Maker can enable anyone with an
interest in cartography to update the maps of the areas they know, and improve level
of detail and accuracy. Cartographers can then add for example new businesses,
outlining building footprints, fixing road geometries…
During the debut of September 2012, some with an interest in cartography across Africa attended the Map Maker Africa Regional Conference in Lagos, Nigeria where Google also announced the release of Map Maker in Lesotho. This means that the Map Maker tool now enables volunteer mappers to update and edit the entire continent of Africa. During the event, attendees shared learnings from past MapUps and ideas for future ones, told inspiring user stories, discussed product features with engineers.
