American consumers’ knowledge about the Internet of Things: figures, facts, realities and stakes.



Our unique experience of the Internet of Things (IoT) allows us to progressively observing that, many people are unfamiliar with the term ‘Internet of Things’ but they are excited when the technology is explained and by the promise of this technology.

When it comes to the Internetof Things (IoT), clearly, we talk about technologies that connect “smart” devices and everyday electronic objects to you and the Internet to share inter alia, information, improve living conditions and drive new applications.
As part of our global commitment, we have captured for you the results of SOASTA ‘s first Internet of Things Survey, which shows that nearly three out of four (73 percent) Americans admit to being unfamiliar with the Internet of Things (IoT).
According to this study, the most highly anticipated applications of internet-enabled consumer technology include:
  • Cars : 39 %
  • Smart home appliances : 34%
  • Heart monitors : 23 %
  • Pet monitors (e.g., GPS tracker) : 22 %
  • Fitness devices : 22 %
  • Child monitors : 20 %
  • Toys : 19 %
  • Drones : 18 %
  • Glasses : 15 %
  • Clothes : 15 %
  • Sports equipment : 9 %
Nearly all Americans (77 %) think that IoT can improve any activity. Almost half of Americans (47%) say IoT would help them stay healthy, and 46 percent say it would help them save energy, for example by reducing their carbon footprint. Other answers included:
  • Working out : 31%
  • Work : 29 %
  • School : 28 %
  • Updating friends and colleagues : 17%
  • Babysitting : 16 %
  • Religious services :8 %
  • Dating : 8 %
When Americans were asked which SciFi story most accurately reflects the promise of the next wave of technology, including IoT and cloud computing, the respondents’ overwhelming favorite was Star Trek (12%), followed by The Jetsons (9 %). Other top choices included:

  • 1984 : 5 %
  • Her : 5 %
  • Wall-E : 5 %
  • Total Recall – 4 %
  • X-Men : 3 %
  • The Terminator – 3 %
  • Star Wars : 3 %
  • Blade Runner :1%
