OpenGL Ecosystem: standards, recent trends, actors, stakes, realities and opportunities.
When it comes to your mobile devices,
PCs and wearables, nothing is also exciting like the visual experience. This factor
is determinant with regard to market.
Connectikpeople.co, soon #Retinknow®
salutes the fundamental role played by the Khronos Group within this ecosystem.
If unfamiliar, Connectikpeople.co,
soon #Retinknow®, recalls that, Khronos Group is an industry consortium
creating open standards to enable the authoring and acceleration of parallel
computing, graphics, vision, sensor processing and dynamic media on a wide
variety of platforms and devices.
Among its OpenGL® family of 3D
standards, we have captured inter alia: OpenGL, OpenGL ES™ and WebGL™, which can
provide portable access to graphics and compute capabilities across multiple
platforms, including Android, iOS, Linux, OS X, Windows and the Web.
The recent release of the OpenGL4.5 aims to bring the latest functionality to the industry’s most
advanced 3D graphics API while maintaining full backwards compatibility,
enabling applications to incrementally use new features.
Regarding the next Generation
OpenGL Initiative, Khronos announced a call for participation to define
a future open standard for high-efficiency access to graphics and compute on
modern GPUs.
Connectikpeople.co, soon #Retinknow®, observes that, key directions for the
new ground-up design include explicit application control over GPU and CPU
workloads for performance and predictability, a multithreading-friendly API
with greatly reduced overhead, a common shader program intermediate language,
and a strengthened ecosystem focus that includes rigorous conformance testing.
